说明：这本书是卡尔维诺第二本译成英语的小说集，除了一篇《阿根廷蚂蚁》选自1952年的Botteghe Oscare X以外，其他短篇都包括在1949年Einaudi出版的Ultimo Viene il Corvo（最后飞来的是乌鸦）。小说集的内容主要是二战期间及战后的普通意大利人的生活，以及战争故事，和他的上一部小说《通往蜘蛛巢的小路》之间有延续性。在写作手法上，仍以现实主义为主，但在其中已经充分表现出卡尔维诺后来的一些重要特点，比如灵巧紧凑的结构，富有趣味的情节，简洁生动的语言。
