与副词always、forever、constantly搭配，表达特定的情绪（不耐烦、厌烦、表扬）。

比如：

ShewasalwaysringingmeupwhenIwasinLondon.

我在伦敦时她总是不停给我打电话。（表达厌烦）

Shewasalwayshelpingotherswhenshelivedhere.

她住这里时总是乐于助人。（表达表扬）

重点！

同样是表达过去时间，一般过去时表示动作已经完成，而过去进行时往往表示动作还没完成。

比如：

HewasstudyinginAmericalastyear.Idon’tknowwhetherhehasreturned.

他去年在美国学习，不知道她是否已经回来了。

HestudiedinAmericalastyear.

他去年在美国学习。（言下之意，现在已经学成归来）
